Anthony and I are heading to Michigan tomorrow to spend the Fourth of July tubing down a river with some of his college buds. So while we are reliving some of his college days, I’m assuming there will be far more beer than green smoothies… My body doesn’t tend to do well when I get off of my routine and normal eating habits so I’m trying to prepare ahead to reduce the damage.
I’ll be lightly tracking my macros still, but hey, it’s a vacation. I’m not going to be upset with myself over not eating perfectly healthy. But I also don’t want to go crazy in the other direction, so here are my top 4 healthy travel essentials:
- My water bottle. If I have water on hand, I’ll drink it. It’s that simple. Once you get past airport security any food stand is more than willing to fill a bottle with icy cold H2O. This will also save you money at the airport at least! By the way, this Hydro Flask is pretty cool. It keeps ice cubes alive for hours!
- Portable protein. Since I know I won’t have access to my normal foods, at least I can carry a couple items that are staples at home. Protein powder and quest bars to the rescue! Again, you’ll save money since you won’t eat as much at a restaurant by being full on delicious protein. I normally travel with protein powder in a plastic bag but the TSA frowns upon bags of white powder…. So I had to find some single serve packets. I have no idea how this brand tastes, but it is minimal in ingredients so it won.
- My Fitbit. I have no intention of doing a full workout while on vacation but I don’t want to be a complete bum either. Keeping up with my Fitbit step goal will help minimize any vacation weight gain. It’s also just a good reminder to keep moving!
- My headphones and the Relax & Rest meditation app. I’m a terrible sleeper normally, and it only gets worse when I’m away from home. Listening to this app as I’m falling asleep has turned into a life saver! At home, I fall asleep before its done looping through the 13 minute meditation. I’ve used it while traveling before and was able to sleep much better. Highly recommend it! You can get it for $2.99 on iTunes in combination with another meditation app called Simply Being.
